Stop Collecting Information, Start Creating Results
Stop Collecting Information, Start Creating Results
As I shared in my newsletter on April 26, growth rarely happens by accident. Like a garden that needs tending, our personal and professional development requires intentional care. These seven barriers often work silently in the background, stopping our progress without us even noticing.
Last week, we talked about the Assumption Barrier. This week, I want to share something equally important but often overlooked: The Knowledge Paradox.
Knowledge: The Paradox of Information
Have you ever noticed how some people keep learning and learning but never seem to move forward? Or maybe you have done this yourself? I know I have!
The Knowledge Paradox happens in two ways: Some people do not have enough information, so they cannot take action. Others have too much information, which makes them feel stuck and unable to choose what to do first
Both problems lead to the same result: not taking action.
My Personal Story
Let me share how this showed up in my own life.
When I first learned about the importance of marketing for my business, I got very excited. I wanted to learn everything! I spent hours studying digital and social media marketing, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, emails, search engine optimization, and many more platforms.
I filled notebooks with ideas. I watched countless videos. I read so many articles that my eyes hurt at night.
But then something strange happened. With all this knowledge, I felt more confused than ever. I had so many options that I could not decide which one to try first. I wanted to do everything at once! The result? I ended up doing almost nothing. All that learning led to very little actual marketing.
My head was full of knowledge, but my business was not growing.
How Growth Finally Happened
The turning point came when I realized that more information was not the answer. I needed to use what I already knew.
I took a step back and asked a simple question: “What am I really trying to do here?” The answer was clear, I wanted to reach my audience with helpful information they actually needed.
So instead of learning more marketing techniques, I started learning about my audience: – What problems did they have? – Where did they go to find solutions? – How could I help them in those places?
This focused approach changed everything. I discovered that most of my ideal customers spent time on LinkedIn and read emails regularly. Instead of trying to master seven different platforms, I decided to start with just these two.
I put all my energy into creating helpful LinkedIn posts and writing emails that solved real problems. Only after I got good results with these two platforms did I consider adding others.
Growth happened when I decided to deepen my knowledge in one specific area and apply that knowledge to get results before moving to other areas.
What This Means For You
Think about areas in your life where you might be trapped in the Knowledge Paradox: – Do you have bookshelves full of unread books on topics you want to master? – Have you taken many courses but applied very few of the lessons? – Do you spend more time learning new approaches than practicing the basics?
Remember that knowing something and doing something are very different. Twenty books on fitness will not make you stronger if you never exercise. One hundred cooking videos will not make you a better cook if you never enter the kitchen.
Knowledge without action is just information. But knowledge with action becomes wisdom.
Action Point
- Choose ONE area where you have collected a lot of knowledge but taken little action. Write down the THREE most important things you already know about this topic. Then commit to spending 20 minutes each day this week applying just one of these principles.
Remember: The goal is not to know more. The goal is to use what you already know.
