Strength Without Stamina: My 10-Minute Football Disaster Story

As we launch our new monthly series “Sometimes You Win and Sometimes You Learn,” I am thrilled to begin with a topic we can all relate to: the quest for fitness. Before diving in, let me explain the philosophy behind this series. I am passionate about helping you reframe every life experience as an opportunity for growth.

Whether we achieve our desired outcomes (wins) or fall short (lessons), there is always something valuable to gain. This perspective is beautifully captured in John C. Maxwell’s book “Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Learn” notice he does not say “lose.” Each Saturday this month, I will share both a significant triumph and a meaningful lesson in different aspects of life. Today, we focus on fitness!

Big Win

I have been blessed with genetic good fortune from my father’s side, a metabolism that burns calories at an impressive rate. This natural advantage allows me to eat generously while maintaining a physique comparable to a racing horse rather than reflecting my actual appetite (which is more elephant-like, I must admit).

During my mid-teens, I had the good fortune of learning from an uncle who was passionate about bodybuilding. He taught me the fundamentals of maintaining momentum with push-ups, and remarkably, three decades later, I can still complete 40 consecutive push-ups without breaking! If that does not sound impressive to you, you are likely among the elite fitness enthusiasts already, and I genuinely applaud your dedication.

Big Loss (Lesson)

There exists a profound difference between appearing fit and possessing genuine fitness, a distinction I learned through humbling experience. This reality struck me powerfully during a pivotal football match between my team and our rivals. I was assigned a crucial defensive position and confidently strode onto the field, expecting to play the entire match with vigor and endurance.

Instead, within just five minutes of play, I found myself desperately gasping for air, my lungs burning and muscles screaming in protest. The situation deteriorated so rapidly that I nearly lost consciousness on the field. The coach had no choice but to substitute me merely ten minutes into the game. Our team ultimately lost the match, while I cannot claim we would have emerged victorious had I remained playing, my premature exit certainly did not help our chances.

This experience taught me an invaluable lesson about fitness: looking athletic and being genuinely fit are entirely separate realities. I had neglected aerobic conditioning while focusing exclusively on strength training, creating a dangerous imbalance in my fitness regimen. True fitness requires both anaerobic exercises for muscle development and aerobic training for cardiovascular health, all supported by mindful nutrition.

Action Points:

  1. Conduct a Balanced Fitness Assessment: Take time this weekend to honestly evaluate your fitness routine. Does it incorporate both strength-building exercises and cardiovascular conditioning? If not, identify specific ways to bring greater balance to your regimen.
  2. Create a 30-Day Challenge: Design a month-long fitness initiative that addresses your weakest areas while maintaining your strengths. Include measurable goals and accountability measures to ensure consistent progress.

Remember, each drop of sweat represents not just calories burned, but lessons learned about our bodies, our limitations, and our remarkable capacity for growth.
