Last week, we talked about how your appearance sends a signal to the world about your readiness to lead. This week, we move to the second A in the, The Five A’s of Visibility, and it is one that many hardworking professionals quietly struggle with: Achievements.
THE MYTH: Good Work Does Not Always Speak for Itself
Here is something that might surprise you. In many workplaces, especially across North America, there is a popular belief that if you just do great work, people will notice. They will see your effort, recognise your results, and reward you for it.
But that is not always how it works.
Many talented professionals hit their numbers every single month. They do exactly what is asked of them and sometimes even more. Yet when promotion time comes around, they are passed over. Not because they did not work hard enough. But because their achievements were silent. No one knew the full story of what they were doing and why it mattered.
THE STORY: The Silent Consultant
Not long ago, I worked with a client at one of the world’s top consulting firms. She was, without question, a powerhouse. Her data was accurate, her reports were spotless, and she was consistently hitting the high-pressure numbers that her role demanded. By any measure, she was doing an outstanding job.
But during performance reviews, something felt off. She noticed that her contributions were being minimised as if the people above her could not quite see what she was bringing to the table. The problem was not her performance. The problem was that she assumed her leaders could see what she saw. They could not.
Together, we built a system. Not just to hit the numbers, but to give those numbers a voice. We worked on how she could tell the story behind her data, the real-world impact of her work, the lives it touched, the problems it solved in a way that her leadership could feel, not just read on a spreadsheet.
Within just a few months of making that shift, she secured her promotion.
THE SYSTEM: Quantity, Quality, and Communication
Becoming visible for your achievements is not about showing off. It is about making sure the right people have the right information. Think of it as a three-part system:
1. Quantity of Results If your role is driven by numbers, you need to track them carefully and consistently. To be noticed at the next level, aim to go beyond what is expected, not by a little, but by enough that your output stands apart from your peers. Numbers give decision-makers a logical reason to advocate for you.
2. Quality of Impact Numbers tell people what you did. But stories tell them how and why it mattered. Leaders receive information emotionally before they justify it logically. So alongside your data, you need real examples, individual cases, moments where your work made a genuine difference. That is what sticks in people’s minds long after a meeting is over.
3. Vocalising Success Having great results and great stories is only half the battle. You also need to share them. This is not about bragging. It is about ensuring that the people who make decisions about your future have everything they need to go to bat for you. If you do not tell them, they simply may not know.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: The Five A’s Work Together
Here is something important to keep in mind as you think about your own visibility journey. Moving to the next level is never about just one thing. It is about a system, a collection of habits and practices that work together in harmony.
Achievements are the engine. They power everything forward. But Appearance, Appreciation, Association, and Authenticity are the navigation tools. They make sure that engine takes you in the right direction toward the career and the recognition you have worked so hard to earn.
Action Points:
- The Weekly Win Log: Before you close your laptop this weekend, write down three specific achievements from this week. List the number (Quantity) and the specific impact (Quality) of each.
- The Advocacy Update: Identify one leader or stakeholder this week and share a 2-minute “vocal update” on a recent win. Focus on the emotional impact, how it solved a problem for the organization.
