My Career Did not Go According to Plan

My career has not gone according to ‘Plan’.

I studied pharmacy in school, started my career as a management consultant, worked as an HR leader and today I work within the growth organization of a fantastic health tech company.

In retrospect some might think I planned things to turn out exactly the way they did, but if I said so I’ll be lying.

• As a pharmacy student, my plan was to be a university professor
• As a management consultant, my plan was to rise to the level of Partner
• As an HR leader, I wanted to be become a global HR thought leader

So you see things have not gone according to plan but I can tell you that my career journey has been a fulfilling one.

I’ve learnt that the ultimate benefit of a plan is not for things to go exactly to plan but the plan helps me have a firm basis to adjust when things don’t go according to what I expect.

Beyond the plan what is more critical is ‘Your Why’. As Simon Sinek #startwithwhy

My ‘Why’ of ‘helping people be better so they can do better’ has been my north star and this has helped me in navigating my career journey.

So here’s my advice
– Start planning your career with ‘Your Why’
– Be the best you can be where you are today
– Stay open to new opportunities and don’t be too stuck to your plan

When you start with why, you won’t have to end asking yourself ‘why?!’
